Frequently Asked Questions
I am using Windows Vista, and I get an error message when I try to install or run the software.
Please try running the dictionary in XP compatibility mode. To do this, right click the LDOCE desktop shortcut and select 'properties' then the 'compatibility' tab and choose 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' from the dropdown list. Tick the 'Run as administrator' checkbox at the bottom.
I am using Windows NT/Windows 2000/Windows XP, but an error message appears:
You must be logged on as Administrator to install the CD. You then must run the CD under the Administrator log-on once, then you can use it under your own log-on.
The phonetic front isn't displayed correctly
If the phonetics in the dictionary look strange you have to replace the phonetic font.
This is done automatically by downloading a patch:
You must have WinZip to open this zip file.
1. |
Download the patch, by clicking here: ldoce_patch.zip.
Click: SaveSave the file to a folder of you choice, i.e. My Documents
Once it has saved, close the download window
Now go to the dowloaded patch: ldoce_patch.zip and double-click on it.
WinZip will now open.
Click: Extract
Extract it to a folder of your choice, i.e. My Documents
|
| |
|
2. |
Install the patch
Now go to the folder where it has been extracted to and double-click on: doce_patch_10.exe
Click: "Yes" when asked: "Do you want to install this patch (v1.0) for LDOCE?"
Once the patch has been installed you will see the message: "Patch successfully applied. Please restart your computer now"
|
| |
|
3. |
Restart your computer.
The phonetics should now be OK.

Do I need to have the CD in the CD drive for the programme to work?
You can choose from three types of installation:
Minimal - the program will only run if the CD is present
Standard - the program runs from the hard drive but sounds will not play unless the CD is present
Full - the program runs from the hard drive, do do not need the CD in the drive.
I get the following message when I try to run the CD: Cannot locate the CD-ROM. Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application
This message appears because you have installed the Full version of the CD, 27 days after you have installed the CD this message will appear and will ask you to insert the CD. This is because the software needs to be authenticated and it helps stop the illegal use of the CD.
Please insert the CD and click: OK
'LDOCE Installer' window will appear
'Authenticate from original CD' - will be selected
Click: Finish
The CD will now run as normal
You will then have to insert the CD again after every 30 days.
The pop up mode doesn't work
If you have problems getting the dictionary to grab words in pop up mode remember that you have to point the cursor to the word AND then press the CTRL key
